More and more homes have a heat pump, and in summer that gives you something you did not ask for: floor cooling. The same pipes that warm your home in winter circulate cool water in summer. Nice, but it immediately raises a question. Can you put a rug on it?
Yes. But it works a little differently than heating, and that is worth explaining.
Cooling works slower than heating
Underfloor heating delivers a lot of power. When cooling, it is lower, about half, because you cannot cool the water endlessly without condensation forming.
That means every layer between the floor and the room carries relatively more weight. When heating, you barely notice a small difference. When cooling, you do. That is exactly why the choice of your rug matters more here than in winter.
What to look for
The same number as with Underfloor heating: the thermal resistance, expressed in m² K / W. If you stay below 0.17 m² K / W, your rug will let heat through. And because heat moves in both directions, that applies just as well to cool air.
Every rug you find here has been tested for that resistance, and you can read the value per rug on the product page. They all stay below the limit, so you do not have to calculate anything. If you want the most effect in summer, choose a rug with the lowest possible value.
Wool and moisture
When cooling, the floor temperature drops, and where cold and warm air meet, moisture forms. Wool absorbs moisture without feeling damp and releases it again as the air gets drier. That makes a Wool rug especially comfortable on a cooled floor, where a synthetic rug leaves moisture sitting on the floor.
On PVC, wood or tiles
What lies under your floor cooling does not matter for your choice. Whether you have PVC, a wooden floor or tiles, a heat-permeable rug works on all three. What matters is the rug’s own resistance.
Summer and winter, the same rug
The beauty of one system that does both is that you only have to choose once. A rug that lets your heat through in winter lets your cool air through in summer. You put it down and you are set for the whole year.
