Has your dog or cat left an unwelcome surprise on your new rug? No need to worry. Follow these steps and your rug will soon look as it should.
One rule matters most: act quickly. This keeps the mess from working into the fibres and leaving a stain.
Step 1: Scrape and remove
Wear disposable gloves to protect your hands, and remove as much as you can.
Then use a scraper or a flat object, such as a spatula, to gently scrape away the rest. Make sure most of it is gone before moving on.
Step 2: Lukewarm water with shampoo
Dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and add a few drops of shampoo. Blot the area gently, without rubbing: rubbing only spreads it. Keep blotting for about a minute, until the stain is gone.
Step 3: Let it dry
Blot with a dry cloth to absorb the remaining moisture, then let the rug air dry.
Step 4: Neutralise the odour
If an odour remains, sprinkle some baking soda over the area. It neutralises the smell. Leave it for a few hours, then vacuum thoroughly.
