Has your dog or cat had an accident on your rug? No need to worry. Follow these steps and your rug will soon look as it should.
With urine stains, one rule matters most: act quickly. This keeps the urine from drying and soaking deep into the fibres, which makes the stain harder to remove.
Step 1: Blot with a cloth
Take a clean cloth and dampen it with lukewarm water. If you like, add a drop of highly diluted shampoo. Blot the stain gently, without rubbing: rubbing only spreads it. Keep blotting for about a minute, until most of the urine has been absorbed.
Step 2: Lukewarm water with vinegar
Mix some lukewarm water with a few drops of vinegar. Take a fresh, clean cloth and blot the stain again. The acidity of the vinegar helps neutralise the stain without harming your rug. Keep going until the stain is completely gone.
Step 3: Let it dry
Blot with a dry cloth to absorb the remaining moisture, then let the rug air dry.
Step 4: Neutralise the odour
If an odour remains, sprinkle some baking soda over the area. It neutralises the sharp smell of urine. Leave it for a few hours, then vacuum thoroughly.
