While painting your walls, splashes of paint end up on your rug. Now what? Don't panic. If you follow the following steps, your rug will soon be clean again.

There is one golden rule when it comes to paint stains on your rug: react quickly! This will prevent the paint stain from drying and soaking deep into the rug's fibers, making it more difficult to remove. So it is important to take action right away.

We make a distinction between acrylic paint (primer or bottom coat), latex paint (wall paint) and lacquer paint (protective layer for wood).

Acrylic paint (primer)

Step 1: Dab with acetone

Take a cloth and dampen it with a splash of acetone. Gently dab on the acrylic paint without rubbing. Rubbing will only make the stain bigger. Continue to gently dab for 1 minute until the paint stain is completely gone.

Step 2: Let it dry for a while

Finally, take a dry cloth and pat away the excess moisture. Then let your rug air dry and your rug will be stain-free again.

Latex paint (wall paint)

Step 1: Dab with a cloth

Take a clean cloth and gently dab over the paint stains without rubbing. Rubbing will only make the stain bigger. Keep dabbing gently for 1 minute until you have absorbed most of the paint.

If dabbing with a cloth is not enough, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Lukewarm water with shampoo

Take a cloth and wet it with lukewarm water. To this, add a few drops of shampoo. Once again, gently dab over the paint spot until it is gone.

Step 3: Scrape and Remove

You may notice that the latex paint is drying and hardening a bit in the meantime. You can remove the paint with a scraper or other flat object. You can then vacuum up the flakes with a vacuum cleaner.

Step 1: Dab with white spirit

Take a cloth and add to it a dash of white spirit (turpentine). Gently dab over the paint stains without rubbing. Rubbing will only make the stain bigger. Continue dabbing gently for 1 minute until you have absorbed most of the paint.

Step 2: Let it dry for a while

Finally, take a dry cloth and pat away the excess moisture. Then let your rug air dry and your rug will be stain-free again.
